Residing in the constellation Monoceros is a grouping of reflection nebulae believed to be associated with a huge nebulae complex that also encompasses the more famous Cone and FoxFur nebulae. A reflection nebula is a cloud of gas and dust which does not create its own light, but instead shines by reflecting the light from nearby stars. The brightest reflection nebulae are places where new stars are being formed. IC447 or IC2169 is brightest and largest reflection nebula is also known as Dreyer's Nebula, named after John Louis Emil Dreyer who compiled the New General Catalog (NGC) in 1888 and Index Catalog (IC) in 1895 and 1908. However, the nebula was actually discovered by E.E. Barnard, apparently twice, in 1894 and 1895. He reported each with slightly different positions which is why it has two different Index Catalog designations. Also present are the reflection nebulae IC446, NGC2247, vdB79 and NGC2245. Barnard 37 is the most prominent dark nebula in the scene. The cloud complex containing these reflection nebulae is estimated as being 2,500 light years away. Source: multiple sites.
