RCW38 (aka Gum23) is an emission nebula residing in the constellation Vela. The Vela region is full of very dense star fields and other nebulae, including the famous Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR). The red HII clouds of RCW38 are vigorously active with star formation producing hot young stars. In the presented visible light image, many of these young stars and open star clusters are not visible. At infrared wavelengths the cluster [BDB2003] G267.92-01.06 powering RCW38 can be seen, consisting of approximately 2000 stars of which 31 of these are candidate O or B class stars.
