Located in the constellation Dorado, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is an irregular dwarf galaxy that is a member of the local group of galaxies. The term "irregular galaxy" refers to the fact that no apparent structure can be seen. However there are some prominent features such as its bright central bar and numerous other objects located in the rich dust and gas. One such object is NGC2070, the Tarantula Nebula which an active star forming region. Various star clusters, plantary nebulae also exist. The Large Magellanic cloud is located 180,000 light years away. The image is a four panel mosaic, LRGB composite. |
