         Object M8 - Lagoon Nebula
Comment Residing in the constellation Sagittarius is the Lagoon Nebula (aka M8), discovered by Giovanni Hodierna in 1654. The nebula got its name from the dark dust lanes that run through the center. Hot stars in the embedded open star cluster NGC6530 power the nebular glow. Bok globules are abundant within the nebula producing small dark knots which are condensing protostellar clouds. The nebula is approximately 4500 light years.
