IC2220 in the constellation of Carina is more commonly known as the Toby Jug Nebula, named by astronomers Paul Murdin, David Allen and renowned astrophotographer David Malin because of its resemblance to the shape of an tankard called a Toby Jug. It is sometimes referred to as the Butterfly Nebula, owing to the similarity in appearance as a butterfly in flight. IC2220 is considered to be a bipolar and biconical reflection nebula around an early-M giant star, HR 65750. It is believed that the nebular dust has formed due to the star's outflow. IC2220 is approximately 300 light years distant. This image is a LRGB composite. Lightbuckets 16" RCOS. |
